Mumbai: WR adopts latest internet protocol technology in communication & IT. Western Railway WR (first in Indian Railways) has successfully migrated our IT network from IPV4 to latest internet protocol IPV6 by using our own resources.
IPv6 is an emerging next generation internet protocol standard. Few of the advantages of IPv6 are as mentioned below:
1. IPv6 networks provide auto configuration capabilities whereas in IPv4 Networks must be configured manually or with DHCP.
2. IPv6 has improved security features. In IPv4 security is dependent on applications and it was not designed with security in mind. IP security is built into the IPv6 protocol, usable with a suitable key infrastructure.
3. IPv6 restores end-to-end transparency
4. IPv6 has more addresses (340 trillion trillion trillion address as compared to IPv4, which permits maximum of approximately 4.7 billion address) and are simpler, flatter and more manageable for large installations.
5. IPv4 was designed as a transport and communications medium whereas potential of IPv6 has triggering innovation and its assisting collaboration is unbounded.
6. Quality of services will be more improved (downloading is fast for videos and large files).
As the Railway Board have decided to migrate from IPv4 to IPv6, Western Railway have successfully migrated all 322 VLANs departmentally without any technical support of firm and prior training.
It is the proud moment for Western Railway to bring to your knowledge that WR has become 1st Zonal Railway on Indian Railway to migrate on IPv6.
