Lakes supplying water to Mumbai is now half full!. The water level in the seven lakes that supply water to the city has reached up to half of the total capacity in less than 15 days after it had been dry for so certain period.
The water stock is enough for five months. But it needs to increase further to 100 per cent capacity by the end of monsoon, i. e. September 30, for the city to have uninterrupted water supply till next monsoon or for 10 months.
The Brihan Mumbai municipal corporation BMC had also imposed a 10 percent water cut from june becuas there was only about 9% stock of water was remaining in lakes of mumbai.
But the good news is that the water in the lakes started to increase right from july 12 as heavy rains lashed the city of Mumbai and its catchment areas and lakes supplying water to Mumbai is now half full and enough for 4 to 5 months.
The current water stock in the lakes of Mumbai are :
Lake | june 12-30 july 12 |
Upper Vaitarna | 0% 38 % |
Middle Vaitarna |
8% 47% |
Modak Sagar | 35% 88 % |
Tansa | 5% 58 % |
Bhatsa | 8% 46% |
Tulsi | 25% 71 % |
Vihar | 13% 50 % |
TOTAL | 9% 50 % |
Civic officials of Bmc, warns that though the heavy rain filled up the lakes fast, it would not resolve the water issue if the lakes are not full at the end of the season as many years ago rains and receded and water stock came down drastically about 90% and city faced water cut so regular checking of water level is must.
