In India, more women than men express confidence in their skills for career advancement, according to a report released on Wednesday by ADP Research. The study reveals that 40% of women are confident in their abilities to progress in their careers, compared to 36% of men.

Interestingly, 37% of women believe their employers invest in the skills necessary for their career growth, while only 29% of men share this belief.

The global report, based on survey data from nearly 38,000 working adults across 34 markets on six continents, examines the untapped potential of workers worldwide. It finds that only 24% of the global workforce feels confident they possess the skills needed to advance to the next job level in the near future. Additionally, a mere 17% of workers strongly agree that their employers are investing in the skills required for their career progression.

India shows slightly better results, with 37% of workers confident in their skills for career progression and approximately one-third (32%) feeling that their employers are investing in their skill development.

The report underscores the need for employers to prioritize skills development, emphasizing that a skilled workforce is more loyal and productive. Nela Richardson, Chief Economist at ADP, noted, “Our research shows that a skilled workforce is more loyal to their employers—and more productive. Yet only a small fraction of workers are upskilled within two years of being hired.”

Richardson added, “If companies want to benefit from the enormous technological advancement to come, they must start with investing in the skills and career progression of their workers.”

The report also examined the impact of skills development learned through on-the-job training, finding that most workers believe their employers could improve in this area. The analysis highlights the business opportunities that arise from comprehensive training programs, which help ensure employees are prepared for the future of work.
