The United States inaugurated its consulate in Bengaluru on Friday, marking a significant milestone in enhancing diplomatic relations between India and the US. The event signifies a major step forward in cementing the ties between the two nations and expanding their cooperative efforts in various domains.
The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of prominent dignitaries, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and US Ambassador Eric Garcetti. This distinguished gathering underscored the importance of the event and the collaborative spirit between India and the United States.
In his address to the gathering, EAM Jaishankar remarked, “The inauguration of the US Consulate in Bengaluru is a significant milestone, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of Bengaluru and Karnataka. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has taken steps to address this need. This consulate provides an exceptional platform for the people of Karnataka to connect with global aspirations. Being part of this event has brought me immense happiness.” He later posted on X, emphasizing the strengthening collaborations in technology, innovation, space, defense, and education that the new consulate will facilitate.
Deputy CM Shivakumar, speaking to the media on the occasion, expressed gratitude to the American Consulate and EAM Jaishankar. He highlighted the historical significance of the event, mentioning Jaishankar’s father’s role as the Chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru. Shivakumar noted the continuous efforts by Members of Parliament and other officials to bring the US Consulate to Bengaluru, a move that has been long-awaited. He praised Karnataka’s contributions to India’s digital economy and emphasized the importance of Bengaluru as a global hub for IT, BT, and startups. Shivakumar also mentioned the state’s significant role in health tourism and its contribution to the country’s tax revenue and export generation.
BJP National Yuva Morcha President and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya shared his thoughts, expressing the convenience and significance of having a US Consulate in Bengaluru. He stated, “Even though Bengaluru is globally recognized for its contributions to research, innovation, and exploration, the absence of a US Consulate in the city forced Kannadigas to travel to distant cities like Hyderabad or Chennai.” Surya emphasized that the inauguration of the consulate is not only a matter of convenience but also a step toward positioning Bengaluru among globally significant cities. The consulate is expected to benefit lakhs of students, professionals, and others, strengthening India-US bilateral relations.
The inauguration is seen as a proud moment for Karnataka, fulfilling a long-standing demand and enhancing the state’s global recognition. The US Consulate in Bengaluru, India’s Silicon City and a hub of technology and innovation, will greatly benefit residents who previously had to travel to other cities for visa processing. This development is expected to bolster economic and academic exchanges and facilitate the mobility of talent between the two nations.
In summary, the opening of the US Consulate in Bengaluru represents a significant advancement in India-US diplomatic relations, promising enhanced collaborations across various fields and contributing to the continued growth and development of Karnataka.
