SBI Aims for Net-Zero Emissions by 2055

The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced its ambitious target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2055, coinciding with the bank’s centenary celebrations. This announcement was made by SBI Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty at the ‘SBI Green Marathon Season 5’ event, which saw over 10,000 participants running in the 5km, 10km, and 21 km categories.

Since its inception in 2018, the SBI Green Marathon has grown to symbolize the bank’s unwavering commitment to India’s ‘Mission LiFE’ — ‘Lifestyle for Environment’. This initiative underscores SBI’s dedication to a sustainable future.

Participants in the marathon showcased remarkable endurance, with top performers earning cash prizes of $15,000, $10,000, and $7,000 in the 21km race, and $10,000, $7,000, and $5,000 in the 10km race. The event was certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), providing global recognition to its participants.

To further inspire the runners, legends like Vinod Kumar Sharma, Barun Kumar, Vishak Krishnaswamy, and Ashish Arya graced the event with their presence. The involvement of the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and Indian Army added a significant highlight to the occasion.

Following its kickoff in Mumbai, the SBI Green Marathon will continue to Jaipur on February 16, Bhopal on March 2, and culminate in Delhi on March 9, 2025. The marathon has already been hosted in cities such as Visakhapatnam, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Pune, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, and Patna, as part of its season 5 journey across 12 cities.

According to an official statement, the SBI Green Marathon stands as a testament to the bank’s steadfast commitment to a greener and more sustainable India.

As the largest commercial bank in the country by assets, deposits, branches, customers, and employees, SBI also holds the title of the largest mortgage lender in India, having fulfilled the home-buying dreams of more than 3 million Indian families. The bank’s home loan portfolio has surpassed $93 billion. As of December 2023, SBI boasts a deposit base of over $476.2 billion with a CASA ratio of 41.18 percent and advances exceeding $358.4 billion.

SBI commands a market share of 26.5 percent in home loans and 19.5 percent in auto loans. With the largest network of over 22,400 branches and more than 65,000 ATMs/ADWMs, along with 81,000+ BC outlets, SBI has a significant presence in India. Additionally, the bank has 125 million internet banking users and 133 million mobile banking customers.
