In a groundbreaking advancement for the Indian Army, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the state-of-the-art SANJAY Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS) at the iconic South Block. This automated system is set to revolutionize India’s battlefield operations, bringing unparalleled precision and efficiency to military intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance efforts.
A High-Tech Leap for Battlefield Transparency
SANJAY is designed to integrate data from ground and aerial sensors, processing inputs through advanced analytics to ensure accuracy while avoiding duplication. It creates a Common Surveillance Picture (CSP) over a secure Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network. This CSP will provide real-time inputs to Command Centers and Army Headquarters, bolstering decision-making through the Indian Army’s Decision Support System.
The system offers unmatched capabilities for monitoring India’s vast land borders, detecting intrusions, and enabling commanders to manage operations in both conventional and unconventional warfare scenarios. Equipped with cutting-edge sensors and analytics, SANJAY heralds a transformative era of network-centric warfare for the Indian Army.
Indigenously Developed under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’
Highlighting India’s commitment to self-reliance, SANJAY has been developed indigenously through a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). This initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) vision and follows the Indian Army’s declaration of 2024 as the ‘Year of Technology Absorption.’
The project, costing approximately $290 million, falls under the Buy (Indian) procurement category. It reflects India’s focus on fostering a robust domestic defense ecosystem.
Phased Induction and the ‘Year of Reforms’
SANJAY is set to be deployed across all operational Brigades, Divisions, and Corps of the Indian Army in three phases, beginning in March and concluding in October 2025. This timeline coincides with the Ministry of Defense’s designation of 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms,’ emphasizing modernization and technological adoption within the armed forces.
The launch event was attended by a distinguished gathering of senior officials, including Deputy Defense Minister Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and BEL Chairman Manoj Jain.
