Prime Minister Modi Honors Rani Velu Nachiyar on Her Birth Anniversary
In a heartfelt tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the birth anniversary of Rani Velu Nachiyar, a revered 18th-century warrior queen from the Sivagangai estate in Tamil Nadu. Known for her unparalleled valor and strategic brilliance, Rani Velu Nachiyar’s legacy continues to inspire generations.
Prime Minister Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to honor the courageous queen, stating, “Remembering the courageous Rani Velu Nachiyar on her birth anniversary! She waged a heroic fight against colonial rule, showing unparalleled valour and strategic brilliance. She inspired generations to stand against oppression and fight for freedom. Her role in furthering women empowerment is also widely appreciated.”
Rani Velu Nachiyar, born on January 3, 1730, was the first Indian queen to wage war against the British colonial forces. Raised as the royal heir of the Sivagangai estate, she was trained in various combat techniques and was proficient in multiple languages, including French, English, and Urdu. Her life took a tragic turn during the Kalaiyar Koil War when her husband, Muthu Vaduganatha Thevar, was killed by British forces. Forced to flee with her young daughter, Velu Nachiyar sought refuge in Dindigul under the protection of Gopal Naicker.
During her time in Dindigul, she met Haider Ali, the Sultan of Mysore, who was impressed by her intellect and strategic acumen. With the combined forces of Gopal Naicker and Haider Ali, Velu Nachiyar embarked on a mission to reclaim her kingdom in 1780. This movement is historically significant as it introduced India to the first-ever instance of suicide bombing, a strategy reportedly conceived by Velu Nachiyar and her trusted military commander, Kuyuili.
Velu Nachiyar’s forces successfully infiltrated a British-controlled fort, leading to a decisive victory that allowed her to regain control of her kingdom. Her resistance against the British and the Nawab of Arcot earned her the title “Veeramangai,” or “The Brave One”. In recognition of her legacy, a commemorative postal stamp has been issued in her honor.
