President of India Receives Lisbon’s Prestigious ‘City Key of Honour’, Strengthening Historic Ties with Portugal

In a moment that symbolized the deepening of historic ties between India and Portugal, President Droupadi Murmu was conferred with the prestigious ‘City Key of Honour’ by the Mayor of Lisbon in a ceremony held at the city’s historic City Hall. This gesture, offered on behalf of the city and its residents, served as a warm acknowledgment of the enduring relationship between the two nations.

During her address at the event, the President expressed her gratitude to the Mayor and the people of Lisbon for this remarkable honor. In her speech, she highlighted the unique character of Lisbon, a city celebrated worldwide for its openness, cultural warmth, and respect for diversity. She also commended Lisbon’s role as a global hub of technological innovation and digital transformation. Reflecting on these advancements, she noted the potential for India and Portugal to strengthen their cooperation in areas such as digital public infrastructure and technological progress.

Later in the evening, the President attended a grand banquet hosted in her honor by the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the magnificent Palacio da Ajuda. In her remarks during the banquet, President Murmu reflected on the centuries-old cultural ties shared by the peoples of India and Portugal. These ties, she remarked, have left an indelible impact, seen in architectural marvels, historical landmarks, languages, and even the culinary traditions shared by both nations.

Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal, the President emphasized the natural synergy between the two countries. She underlined their collaboration across diverse fields, including science and technology, defense, information technology, start-ups, research, education, and cultural exchanges. This shared history, according to the President, forms the foundation of a dynamic partnership that is forward-looking and mutually beneficial.

President Murmu also highlighted India’s transformation into a knowledge-based economy and stressed the country’s focus on areas such as science and technology, digital innovation, and start-ups. She regarded Portugal as a valued partner in India’s journey towards creating inclusive and sustainable development models, asserting that the collaboration would benefit not only their respective peoples but also the global community at large.

Reflecting on the milestones achieved in their bilateral relations, the President acknowledged Portugal’s significant role in promoting India-EU relations. She recalled key events like the first India-EU Summit held during Portugal’s Presidency of the European Union in 2000 and the landmark “India-EU Plus 27” Leadership Summit hosted in Portugal in May 2021.

Looking to the future, the President expressed confidence that the already robust India-Portugal partnership would grow even stronger. She envisioned a closer and broader collaboration, emphasizing its potential to contribute to global progress and prosperity.
