In a deeply resonant address to the nation on the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, Hon’ble President Droupadi Murmu extended heartfelt greetings to all Indians and reflected on the country’s remarkable journey since gaining independence. Emphasizing the unity and diversity that defines the nation, she paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices laid the foundation of modern India.
President Murmu began her speech by acknowledging the symbolic significance of the Independence Day celebrations, noting how the unfurling of the tri-colour across the nation, from the Red Fort to local neighborhoods, brings immense joy to over 1.4 billion Indians. She remarked that Independence Day, much like other festivals, is a time for the country to come together as one family.
The President then turned to the historical context of the day, recalling the horrors of partition observed on Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas. She highlighted the immense suffering and loss experienced during that time, underscoring the importance of remembering the past as the nation moves forward. President Murmu honored the memory of those who fought for India’s freedom, mentioning key figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Babasaheb Ambedkar, and many others. She also acknowledged the contributions of tribal leaders such as Birsa Munda, whose birth anniversary will be celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas next year.
Reflecting on India’s progress since independence, President Murmu celebrated the nation’s democratic achievements, particularly the record-breaking participation in the recent general elections. With nearly 97 crore eligible voters, India’s electoral exercise stands as the largest in human history. She praised the Election Commission of India for its flawless execution and acknowledged the dedication of officials and security personnel involved in the process.
The President proudly noted India’s economic progress, with the country emerging as one of the fastest-growing major economies, maintaining an average growth rate of 8 percent annually from 2021 to 2024. This growth has propelled India to become the fifth largest economy in the world, with the potential to soon rank among the top three. She attributed this success to the hard work of farmers, workers, and visionary leadership, while also highlighting the government’s efforts to alleviate poverty, such as the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which continues to provide free rations to about 80 crore people.
In the realm of global affairs, President Murmu emphasized India’s growing influence, particularly following its successful G-20 Presidency, positioning the country as a leading voice for the Global South. She expressed confidence in India’s ability to contribute to global peace and prosperity.
Addressing social issues, President Murmu invoked the words of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, stressing the importance of social democracy alongside political democracy. She called for the rejection of tendencies that stoke discord based on perceived social hierarchies and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to social justice. She highlighted initiatives such as PM-SURAJ, which provides direct financial assistance to marginalized communities, and PM-JANMAN, aimed at improving socio-economic conditions for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). The NAMASTE scheme was also mentioned, ensuring that sanitation workers are not subjected to hazardous tasks.
President Murmu placed special emphasis on gender justice and climate justice, noting the government’s efforts to empower women and its leadership in the global fight against climate change. She urged citizens to adopt lifestyle changes to contribute to environmental preservation and praised the nation’s strides in these areas.
Looking towards the future, President Murmu addressed the youth of India, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping the nation’s destiny during the Amrit Kaal, the 25-year period leading to the centenary of India’s independence. She highlighted the success of the National Education Policy and the government’s initiatives to create opportunities for skill development and employment, including the Prime Minister’s package for skilling and internships for youth.
In the realm of science and technology, the President celebrated India’s achievements in digital applications and space exploration, expressing excitement for the upcoming Gaganyaan Mission, which will see Indian astronauts in space for the first time.
President Murmu also praised the nation’s progress in sports, lauding the Indian contingent’s efforts in the Paris Olympic Games, the cricket team’s victory in the T-20 World Cup, and the rise of Indian prodigies in chess. She expressed pride in the achievements of Indian athletes across various sports, noting how they inspire the next generation.
Concluding her address, President Murmu extended her greetings to the brave jawans of the Armed Forces, the police and security personnel, the judiciary, civil servants, and members of India’s missions abroad. She also acknowledged the Indian diaspora, who continue to make the nation proud with their achievements worldwide.
