The Government of India has announced the opening of nominations for the 2026 Padma Awards, which will be presented on Republic Day, January 26, 2026. Widely regarded as some of the nation’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Awards recognize individuals for their distinguished achievements and exceptional service across a wide array of fields.

Nominations officially began on March 15, 2025, and will close on July 31, 2025. As in previous years, the awards will include three categories: Padma Vibhushan, for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan, for distinguished service of a high order; and Padma Shri, for distinguished service in any field. Established in 1954, these honors span disciplines such as art, literature, sports, medicine, social work, science, public affairs, trade, industry, and civil services.

The government is emphasizing inclusivity by encouraging nominations from all backgrounds, including women, marginalized communities, people with disabilities, and those serving society selflessly. This initiative aligns with the vision of turning the Padma Awards into what officials describe as the “People’s Padma.” Citizens are urged to nominate deserving individuals, including self-nominations, through the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal at .

Government employees and Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) staff are ineligible for the awards, except for doctors and scientists. All nominations must include detailed information in the prescribed format available on the awards portal, along with a maximum 800-word citation that outlines the nominee’s accomplishments and contributions.
