0

Planning a trip from bustling Mumbai to the historical charm of Alwar offered the perfect opportunity to explore a more laid-back region while indulging in local flavors, Rajasthani culture, and architectural marvels. Alwar, known for its forts, palaces, and heritage sites, was ideal for a quick, immersive getaway.

Train Journey

I chose to travel by train to experience the scenic route from Mumbai to Alwar. The Mumbai Bandra Terminus to Alwar route has several convenient options, with the 12216 Garib Rath Express providing a comfortable journey with ample amenities. This train departs around midday from Mumbai and reaches Alwar the following morning, making it a relaxing overnight journey. The sleeper and AC options made for a comfortable experience, with enough time to watch the countryside pass by as we journeyed into Rajasthan.

Stay and Accommodation

Upon arrival, I checked into a heritage-style hotel in Alwar, which featured traditional Rajasthani decor with modern amenities. Many hotels in Alwar emphasize a cultural experience, offering rooms decorated with local textiles, wall art, and traditional Rajasthani furnishings. This ambiance set the tone for exploring the heritage sites.

Food and Cuisine

Alwar is known for its unique Rajasthani dishes, such as dal bati churma, ker sangri, and laal maas. I explored the local eateries and found that the street food scene offered a more diverse selection, including kachoris, pyaaz ki kachori, and sweet treats like milk cake, which Alwar is famous for. For a more refined dining experience, the hotel also offered a curated Rajasthani thali, a must-try if you’re looking to sample a variety of dishes.

Sightseeing and Culture

Alwar is home to the majestic Bala Quila (Alwar Fort), which offers a panoramic view of the city. A tour of Sariska Tiger Reserve, only an hour away, provided a close encounter with diverse wildlife, including the elusive tigers. Other notable sites included the City Palace Museum, showcasing an impressive collection of Mughal and Rajput artifacts, and the Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri, a beautiful cenotaph by Sagar Lake. The architecture and cultural richness were evident in each location, with every site steeped in history.

Shopping and Souvenirs

Shopping in Alwar is a treat, with local markets selling handmade crafts, traditional jewelry, and textiles. I purchased Rajasthani handicrafts, which made for meaningful souvenirs. The vibrant colors and intricate designs showcased the artisans’ skills and allowed me to bring a bit of Alwar’s culture back with me.

Final Thoughts

Alwar proved to be an enriching experience that combined relaxation with adventure, providing a balance of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and cultural depth. The warmth of the people, the diversity of the food, and the allure of the Rajasthani landscapes made it an unforgettable journey.

For anyone looking to escape Mumbai’s fast pace and soak in the heritage and natural beauty of Rajasthan, Alwar is an ideal destination, offering a well-rounded experience with a touch of royal charm.
