Maharashtra on Alert as Zika Cases Rise, Centre Issues Nationwide Advisory

 – The Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory to all states, urging them to heighten vigilance over the Zika virus situation following reported cases in Maharashtra. The focus lies on safeguarding pregnant women and monitoring the development of fetuses at risk.

Pregnant Women Prioritized for Screening and Monitoring

Pregnant women are being prioritized for Zika virus screening across the country. The advisory emphasizes the continuous monitoring of fetal growth in expecting mothers who test positive. This heightened attention stems from Zika’s link to microcephaly, a birth defect causing abnormally small heads in newborns.

Combating Aedes Mosquitoes: A Crucial Step

The advisory, issued by Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, calls for designating nodal officers in health facilities to specifically address Aedes mosquito breeding and control. Zika, similar to dengue and chikungunya, spreads through bites from Aedes mosquitoes.

Maharashtra Reports Zika Cases

As of July 2nd, 2024, Maharashtra has confirmed eight Zika virus cases – six in Pune, and one each in Kolhapur and Sangamner. Health authorities are urging the appointment of nodal officers in healthcare facilities to tackle Aedes mosquito infestations and prevent further transmission.
