The Indian personal computer (PC) market experienced robust growth in 2024, with total shipments rising by 3.8% year-over-year (YoY) to 14.4 million units, according to a new report. This resurgence was driven by increased demand across both consumer and commercial segments, highlighting the market’s steady recovery.
The latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that notebooks led the charge with a 4.5% YoY increase in shipments. Desktops also saw a positive trend with a 1.8% YoY rise. Workstations recorded the highest growth at 10.9%, indicating strong demand from businesses and professionals.
The final quarter of 2024 proved particularly strong, with the total PC market expanding by 6.9% YoY. Notably, the notebook segment grew by 9.6% YoY, while premium notebooks priced above $1,000 experienced an impressive 13.8% growth.
“The consumer PC market has been on a growth trajectory driven by gaming and AI-powered PCs,” stated Bharath Shenoy, research manager at IDC India & South Asia. He added that gaming notebooks enjoyed double-digit growth in FY2024, and shipments of AI-powered notebooks increased substantially from mid-2024 onwards due to rising demand for lower-end AI PCs powered by Intel Core Ultra processors and AMD Ryzen AI processors.
The e-commerce sector played a significant role in this growth, with sales through online retailers (eTailers) surging 21.7% for the full year and 29% in Q4. This boost was largely driven by vendor stocking ahead of major sales events, including year-end promotions and Republic Day sales in January.
On the commercial front, the segment posted a stronger 5.1% YoY growth in 2024, accelerating to 11.1% YoY in the last quarter of the year. Government purchases through platforms like the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and demand from large enterprises contributed to a 10.6% YoY growth in both the enterprise and government sectors.
As the Indian PC market continues to evolve, these trends highlight the increasing demand for technologically advanced and AI-powered devices, driving growth across multiple segments.
