The Indian Navy’s mission-deployed stealth frigate INS Trikand demonstrated its unwavering commitment to humanitarian aid by rendering critical medical assistance to a Pakistani crew member aboard a fishing vessel in the Central Arabian Sea. This heroic effort, which unfolded 350 nautical miles east of the Oman coast, highlights the Navy’s dedication to saving lives and fostering goodwill across maritime borders.
On the morning of April 4, 2025, INS Trikand intercepted a distress call from the Iranian dhow Al Omeedi, reporting a severe injury sustained by one of its crew members. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the injured individual had been transferred to another dhow, FV Abdul Rehman Hanzia, which was en route to Iran. The crew member, a Pakistani national, suffered multiple fractures and significant hand injuries while working on the engine, resulting in heavy blood loss and critical condition.
INS Trikand immediately altered course to provide the required medical assistance. A team comprising the ship’s medical officer, Marine Commandos (MARCOS), and the Ship’s Boarding Team boarded the FV Abdul Rehman Hanzia to administer emergency care. The injured fingers were sutured and splinted under local anesthesia during a complex surgical procedure lasting over three hours. The swift and effective intervention prevented gangrene, thereby avoiding potential permanent loss of the injured fingers.
In addition to surgical care, INS Trikand supplied the fishing vessel with essential medical supplies, including antibiotics, to ensure the crew’s health until their arrival in Iran. The FV crew, which included 11 Pakistani and 5 Iranian personnel, expressed profound gratitude for the timely intervention that saved the life of their colleague.
This operation underscores INS Trikand’s capabilities as a stealth frigate equipped to respond to emergencies beyond conventional missions. The Indian Navy’s proactive approach in this case exemplifies its role as a dependable force for good, fostering cross-border collaboration and compassion on international waters.
The mission highlights India’s commitment to humanitarian values, showcasing the Indian Navy’s expertise in extending life-saving aid to those in need while navigating complex maritime environments.
