The Indian Navy, operating under the Western Naval Command, has achieved a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat maritime crime. INS Tarkash, a frontline frigate deployed in the Western Indian Ocean for Maritime Security Operations, intercepted and seized over 2,500 kilograms of narcotics during a meticulously coordinated operation.

The seizure occurred on March 31, 2025, as INS Tarkash was patrolling the Western Indian Ocean, actively supporting the Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) under the Bahrain-based Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). As part of the multi-national operation Anzac Tiger, the ship received crucial intelligence from Indian Navy P8I surveillance aircraft about suspicious vessels believed to be involved in narcotics trafficking. Acting on the inputs, INS Tarkash altered its course to intercept the suspect vessels and launched its integral helicopter to monitor activities and identify additional targets.

A specialist boarding team, including Marine Commandos, boarded a dhow suspected of carrying illicit cargo. Following a thorough search, the team discovered over 2,500 kilograms of narcotic substances. This included 2,386 kilograms of hashish and 121 kilograms of heroin stored in various compartments and cargo holds of the vessel. The dhow was subsequently brought under the control of INS Tarkash, while its crew underwent extensive interrogation regarding their activities and connections to other similar vessels operating in the region.

The operation underscored the professionalism and strategic capability of the Indian Navy in preventing illicit activities, particularly drug trafficking, in international waters. INS Tarkash’s deployment to support CTF 150 reflects India’s commitment to promoting security, stability, and prosperity across the Indian Ocean Region.

The Indian Navy continues to play an active role in multinational exercises, strengthening regional cooperation and maritime security. This high-profile seizure not only highlights the effectiveness of India’s naval forces but also reinforces the nation’s dedication to safeguarding the seas against transnational crime.
