The Indian government, through the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), has intensified efforts to boost tourism infrastructure and promote the North-East as a prominent travel destination. These developments reflect the administration’s focus on integrating tourism into the broader economic and cultural framework of the region.

The Ministry of Tourism continues to work in close collaboration with state governments and Union Territory administrations to complement their initiatives for tourism promotion. As part of this effort, the ministry provides financial assistance for infrastructure development under several schemes, including Swadesh Darshan, the National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD), and Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development. These funds support the development of tourist-friendly facilities and enhance the overall visitor experience in the North-East.

To showcase the potential of North-Eastern states, the Ministry of Tourism organizes the International Tourism Mart (ITM). The latest edition of ITM, held in Kaziranga, Assam, from November 26 to 29, 2024, highlighted the diverse cultural and natural attractions of the region. Promotional events, such as fairs and festivals, and social media campaigns further amplify the visibility of tourist destinations in the area.

In addition, the ministry focuses on capacity building and skill development through initiatives like the Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP) scheme, which offers training and certification to professionals in the hospitality sector. Central Institutes of Hotel Management in Guwahati and Shillong play a pivotal role in imparting high-quality education to create a skilled workforce that meets the demands of the tourism and hospitality industry.

MDoNER, through its schemes such as the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) and the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE), has sanctioned multiple infrastructure projects that contribute to tourism growth. These investments encompass a range of activities, from improving transport and communication networks to creating modern amenities for travelers.

Tourist visits to the North-East have surged, according to recent government data. In 2023, the region recorded over 12 million domestic tourist visits (DTVs) and approximately 221,000 foreign tourist visits (FTVs). Assam led the statistics with 7.61 million DTVs and nearly 24,000 FTVs, reflecting its increasing popularity among both Indian and international tourists. Sikkim followed, registering 1.32 million DTVs and close to 94,000 FTVs. Other states, including Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura, also witnessed significant tourist footfall, further emphasizing the region’s growing appeal.

These figures underscore the government’s consistent efforts in elevating the tourism profile of the North-East while fostering cultural exchange and economic development. The strategic alignment of various ministries, combined with the involvement of local communities in project planning, ensures a sustainable and inclusive approach to tourism expansion.
