India marked the 62nd National Maritime Day with nationwide celebrations, paying tribute to the invaluable contributions of seafarers and reaffirming its commitment to sustainable maritime development. The theme for this year, “Prosperous Seas – Developed India and Youth for Blue Economy and Green Growth,” highlighted the pivotal role of the maritime sector in driving economic progress and environmental stewardship.
The central celebration, organized by the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee under the Directorate General of Shipping, took place at the Vinay Marg Sports Ground in New Delhi. The event was graced by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, who emphasized the maritime sector’s transformative potential under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sonowal underscored the sector’s role in connecting India to global opportunities and fostering national progress.
Throughout the week, various activities were held to honor the maritime community, including flag pinning ceremonies, blood donation camps, wreath-laying events for fallen seafarers, and seminars on the future of the Blue Economy. Sporting events such as football, cricket, and relay races were also organized, reflecting the camaraderie and resilience inherent in maritime life.
Sonowal interacted with cadets during the event, encouraging them to lead the charge in shaping India’s maritime future. He praised their dedication and highlighted the importance of empowering youth to drive innovation and sustainability in the sector. The Minister also recognized the contributions of women cadets, urging them to take on leadership roles in the evolving maritime landscape.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways honored individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to the maritime sector, showcasing the nation’s commitment to excellence and innovation. The event saw participation from senior officials, including the Secretary of Shipping and other key stakeholders, alongside 510 trainees and faculty members.
National Maritime Day commemorates the historic voyage of the SS Loyalty, the first Indian-owned steamship, which sailed from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919. This milestone marked India’s entry into international shipping and laid the foundation for its maritime legacy. The 62nd celebration not only honored this legacy but also reaffirmed India’s dedication to building a greener, more inclusive, and innovation-driven maritime future.
