In January, Aadhaar holders conducted more than 2.84 billion authentication transactions, underscoring the continued expansion of India’s digital economy, the government announced on Friday.

The authentication transactions in January recorded a 32% growth compared to the same month last year, when 2.148 billion such transactions were carried out, according to the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

Over 430 million eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) transactions were carried out in January this year. By the end of January, the cumulative number of Aadhaar e-KYC transactions exceeded 22.68 billion.

On average, over 90 million authentications are taking place daily, reflecting the growing adoption and utility of Aadhaar in people’s daily lives. Nearly 550 entities are currently using the Aadhaar authentication service.

Aadhaar face authentication transactions are also gaining significant traction. In January alone, almost 120 million Aadhaar face authentication transactions were conducted. Since its introduction in October 2021, cumulative face authentication transaction numbers have surpassed 1.02 billion. Nearly 780 million of these were recorded in the past 12 months alone.

The AI/ML-based face authentication solution, developed in-house by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is being utilized across various sectors, including finance, insurance, fintech, health, and telecommunications. Multiple government departments, both at the central and state levels, are using it for the efficient delivery of benefits to targeted beneficiaries.

The Aadhaar e-KYC service continues to play a crucial role in banking and non-banking financial services by providing transparent and improved customer experiences and enhancing ease of doing business.

Last month, the Centre expanded Aadhaar authentication to government and private entities for providing various services in the public interest, thereby boosting innovation, knowledge, and public service enhancement. The amendment aims to help people seamlessly avail themselves of services provided by entities beyond the government, including e-commerce, travel, tourism, hospitality, and the health sector.
