Traveling from Mumbai to Pune in a rideshare car is not just a journey between two cities; it’s an experience filled with vibrant sights, tantalizing tastes, and a blend of cultures that define Maharashtra. The journey, typically taking about three to four hours, is a feast for the senses, with the route offering scenic landscapes, charming hill stations, and, of course, the irresistible chikki of Lonavala.

Setting Off from Mumbai

Starting from the bustling streets of Mumbai, the ride begins with the city’s iconic skyline in the rearview mirror. As we weave through the morning traffic, the hum of the city fades, giving way to the open roads. The transition from the urban chaos to the greenery of the outskirts is swift. The road is lined with billboards, each advertising a different world—luxury homes, weekend getaways, and roadside dhabas promising authentic Maharashtrian flavors.

Snacks on the Way

No road trip in India is complete without snacks, and this one was no exception. As the car picked up speed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, our driver pulled over at a popular food plaza. The aroma of freshly brewed tea and frying vadas filled the air. We indulged in a classic combination: hot vada pav, a spicy potato fritter tucked into a bun, served with tangy chutneys. It was the perfect start, warming us up for the cool drive ahead. A steaming cup of masala chai complemented the spicy snack, and we were ready to hit the road again.

The Scenic Lonavala

As we approached Lonavala, the scenery changed dramatically. The expressway cut through lush green hills, with misty valleys on either side. The air was cooler, fresher, carrying the scent of rain-soaked earth and pine trees. Lonavala, perched in the Western Ghats, is a popular stopover on this route, known for its beautiful viewpoints, waterfalls, and, most famously, its chikki.

The Sweet Delight: Lonavala’s Chikki

No trip through Lonavala is complete without stopping for chikki, a traditional Indian brittle made from jaggery and nuts. We made a pit stop at one of the many chikki shops dotting the town. The shop was a treasure trove of sweet treats, with varieties of chikki stacked high—peanut, cashew, almond, and more. The shopkeeper offered samples, and the rich, nutty sweetness melted in our mouths. We couldn’t resist buying a few boxes to take home.

The charm of Lonavala is not just in its chikki but also in its rustic feel. The town, with its narrow lanes, old-world bungalows, and small eateries, gives off a cozy vibe. A quick visit to the nearby Lonavala Lake and a walk around the serene waters added to the tranquility of the trip.

Journey to Pune

Leaving Lonavala, the road continued to wind through the Ghats. The landscape shifted from lush forests to the more arid plains as we descended towards Pune. Along the way, we passed by forts perched on hilltops, remnants of the Maratha Empire’s glory, and small villages where life seemed unhurried. As we neared Pune, the modernity returned, with IT parks and residential complexes dotting the horizon.

Arriving in Pune

Pune welcomed us with its unique blend of tradition and modernity. Known as the cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune is a city of young energy, with its numerous colleges, IT hubs, and historical landmarks. From the ancient Aga Khan Palace to the bustling markets of Laxmi Road, Pune offers a tapestry of experiences waiting to be explored.

The rideshare journey from Mumbai to Pune is more than just a commute; it’s a memorable experience that captures the essence of Maharashtra. From the vibrant streets of Mumbai to the serene hills of Lonavala and the historic charm of Pune, this road trip is a celebration of the state’s rich culture, natural beauty, and, of course, the irresistible taste of chikki. Whether you’re a traveler or a local, this journey is a reminder of the simple joys of life—good food, scenic views, and the thrill of the open road.
