India’s medical tourism sector is on a trajectory of extraordinary growth, with market projections indicating it will reach $18 billion by 2027, growing at an annual rate of 19 percent, according to a recent report. The country has solidified its position as a global hub for international patients, offering high-quality healthcare services at costs far lower than those in Western nations.
The industry, valued at $7 billion in 2022, has seen rapid expansion fueled by a significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) for medical purposes. Between 2015 and 2019, medical tourists grew at an impressive rate of 31 percent annually, increasing from 234,000 to 697,000 visitors. Despite a steep decline in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a 74 percent drop in FTAs, the sector has made a strong recovery. In 2023, FTAs reached 504,000, marking an annual growth rate of 40 percent since the pandemic low.
Bangladesh emerged as the top source of medical tourists, with 327,000 patients visiting India in 2022. Other major contributors include Iraq, Yemen, and several countries from the Middle East and Africa.
One of the key drivers behind India’s appeal is the cost advantage. Medical procedures in India are significantly cheaper than those in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. For instance, a heart bypass surgery costs approximately $5,000 in India compared to $144,000 in the US, while a knee replacement procedure is priced at $6,000, compared to $50,000 in the UK.
India’s unique blend of traditional and modern medicine also adds to its allure. Treatments integrating Ayurveda and Yoga alongside state-of-the-art medical care further enhance the country’s appeal for international patients. Advanced healthcare infrastructure plays a critical role, making India a reliable destination for diverse medical needs.
