The Indian and French Navies have commenced their four-day bilateral naval exercise, Varuna-2025, marking the 23rd edition of this long-standing maritime partnership. The exercise, held from March 19 to 22, showcases the enduring collaboration between the two nations in enhancing naval interoperability and operational synergy.

Varuna-2025 features a wide range of advanced naval maneuvers and drills, including air defense and mock air-to-air combat exercises between French Rafale-M and Indian MiG-29K fighter jets. Anti-submarine warfare exercises focus on building underwater domain awareness, while surface warfare operations demonstrate synchronized maneuvers by fleets from both nations. Maritime patrol aircraft are being deployed to bolster situational awareness, and replenishment-at-sea exercises emphasize logistical cooperation.

This year’s exercise highlights the participation of major naval assets, including the aircraft carriers Vikrant and Charles de Gaulle, fighter aircraft, destroyers, frigates, and an Indian Scorpene-class submarine. These assets underscore the depth of the collaboration and the ability of both navies to operate seamlessly in complex maritime scenarios.

Since its inception in 2001, the Varuna series has become a cornerstone of the India-France strategic partnership. The exercise underscores the shared vision of safeguarding a free, open, and secure maritime environment. It facilitates the exchange of best practices, refines tactical and operational capabilities, and reinforces mutual understanding between the two navies.

Varuna-2025 is a testament to the deep bonds between India and France and their commitment to maritime peace and security.
