The Urgent Need to Upgrade Pune Airport Infrastructure Amid India’s Air Travel Boom

0

India’s booming aviation sector is placing significant strain on existing airports, and Pune Airport is no exception. The rapid rise in air travel, both domestically and internationally, has led to a 37% increase in passenger traffic at Pune Airport in 2023 alone. However, the current infrastructure struggles to cope with this growth, causing congestion and delays.

The recent launch of Pune Airport’s new terminal is a step in the right direction. It can accommodate up to 9 million passengers annually, providing much-needed relief from overcrowding. However, challenges persist, such as limited runway capacity, outdated road access, and insufficient parking facilities, all of which hinder the airport’s ability to meet rising demands.

One of the key bottlenecks is the lack of direct public transport connectivity. Expanding road infrastructure around the airport is crucial for handling the surge in traffic. Proposed solutions include improving access roads to major city hubs and enhancing public transit options like bus and metro services. Additionally, expanding the runway to accommodate larger aircraft and increasing cargo capacity can help streamline operations and meet growing demands.

To sustain long-term growth, Pune needs better alignment between its airport and urban infrastructure development. By investing in these upgrades, the city can not only boost its economic potential but also position itself as a key gateway for air travel in western India, thereby supporting India’s aviation boom.
