In a significant step towards shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI), India, along with 43 other countries, has reached a consensus on the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)’s future vision. This agreement crucially includes a framework for regulating AI technology.
The member countries acknowledge the immense potential of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems to accelerate progress on achieving sustainable development goals. They recognize the importance of coordinated international efforts to harness the immense benefits AI offers.
However, the agreement doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the emerging risks and challenges posed by AI, particularly advanced systems. These concerns encompass safety, security, and potential malicious uses of AI technology.
This consensus emerged from the sixth meeting of the GPAI Ministerial Council held in New Delhi. The meeting, chaired by India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, saw participation from representatives of Japan, Serbia, UNESCO, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The GPAI boasts a diverse membership, including major economies like the US, France, Canada, and the UK, alongside emerging powers like Brazil and Argentina.
India, championing a multi-stakeholder approach, successfully proposed the framework’s foundation. This approach emphasizes a strong scientific basis for AI regulations and prioritizes open solutions and common standards. This paves the way for strengthened cooperation between governments, academia, researchers, the technical community, the private sector, and civil society.
India currently holds the chairmanship of the GPAI. The baton will be passed to Serbia, who will take over the lead role for the 2024-25 term.
